Simplified definition

A condition in which a person loses memory totally, partially, permanently, or temporarily, which is mainly due to damage in a part of the brain responsible for memory, called hippocampus.

  • It is a generic term that refers to memory problems: there can be a difficulty in memorizing new information (anterograde amnesia) and a difficulty in remembering past events (retrograde amnesia).
